Improvising or am I just plain spoiled!

“You are a manipulator.  I like to think of myself more as an outcome engineer.”

― J.R. WardLover Eternal

Wow, previously I posted about pairing my working (which is easy for me to do each day) with exercise, which is much more difficult because I am often working. In the earlier post, I showed the photo of my Kindle on the plastic shelf on my recumbent bike. It was easy for me to ride for 10 miles that day!

And then I thought – what about watching webinars or writing blogs, or updating my websites while I was riding my bike! Look what I found!

I now have a plastic tray that holds my Mac Air laptop. I decided to give it to myself for my birthday which is in February. I am not much of a shopper, but I do splurge around my birthday!

Okay! This is great! Let’s see how I do!

Share with me ways you get yourself to show up for your exercise routine.

Blog, Journal, Blog, Journal . . .

“What we all want, really, is to be loved. That craving drives our worst behavior.”

― Jodi PicoultHandle with Care

Creating a blog can motivate the success of any goal.  Sharing my experience losing weight, eating healthy and exercising has been monumental in my success. The feedback I am receiving, private and public, tells me the the blog is helping you too!

In addition to blogging there is also journaling, but they are very different experiences. With blogging, although I am writing to motivate myself, I have an audience. Being public gives me pause not to share some private thoughts and behaviors. In my journal, I have the freedom to say it all.

When journaling, I write anything and often what comes out comes from a place other than my conscious mind. You will see this in my August 8th journal post “Journaled my Breakthrough.”

When you journal another part of yourself shows up and can be empowering. Maybe it is a nurturing voice that encourages you so that you stay on track. It could be a harsh voice that keeps you in line, and you listen.

Journaling prior to eating something or to motivate you to get moving can be powerful! For instance, let’s say you want to have a cup of ice cream (my fav!) Well, if you are like me, it is unlikely a cup of ice cream would be it. Once I start with ice cream, it seduces me to the bottom of the carton. Full disclosure – I would never buy a size larger than a pint and usually I buy the single serving sizes, times two.

So instead of eating ice cream – or in my case going to the store to by ice cream (never have it around) you might want to journal.

I have developed a journal process for you to use in my  12 Weeks Toolbox

Find a journal and fast writing pen and set the timer for 10 minutes. Keep writing and don’t stop even if you have to write, I don’t know what to say, I don’t know what to say over and over until you break through. Eventually, you can work up to 20 minutes.

Use these sentence stems to get your journal process started. Each one can be a 10 – 20 minute timed writing.

What I love about myself is . . .

I am really hungry for . . .

What frustrates me is . . .

If I had more time . . .

Hunger and cravings can be caused by emotions that are buried. Stress is also a factor in overeating, eating when you’re not hungry and eating unhealthy foods . Often after journaling, the craving to eat or drink just dissipates.

Play around with journaling when your cravings are gnawing at you for a week and see what happens.

Staying on Track

“You never know what’s around the corner. It could be everything. Or it could be nothing. You keep putting one foot in front of the other, and then one day you look back and you’ve climbed a mountain.”

 ― Tom Hiddleston

It is easy to start something and not so easy to keep at it. Often something happens that breaks your stride and you fall off. You move from feeling successful to feeling like a failure and then give up.

What if when something happens, whatever it is, it becomes a ‘wake up’ to transition?

That is what is happening to me. In this instance, I have blogged daily about my progress to health and weight loss since July 30th.

The first several days were in a word document and then posted on August 8th.

It has been over a month now and I hit my bump in the road.

I was doing well when I had the oral surgery and was on hydrocodone. I weaned myself as soon as I could because as a chemical dependency counselor (and a woman of many hats!) I knew the risk for dependency. It has been the last couple days that I realized how much pain I was really having.

This shifted my high motivation to blog and exercise, but it also solidified that any change in my life (and yours) is not an ‘either/or’ process, but just that, a process.

The two ways I have motivated my experience have been 1) hiring a trainer (Luke) and 2) blogging my experience.

Truly, with this downward shift in my energy level and upward shift in my pain level, I am so grateful I had these who checks in place!

I have given myself a couple days to rest and took this week off from the gym. Nevertheless, I am still on track, feeling stronger (in body) and I am losing weight!

My blogging has given me the impetus toward my goals and kept me on my path.  Already on course, my transition now is to blog once or more a week and focus on sharing the gems. I will increase the time I spend moving, whether it be walking, dancing, gardening, or having fun with Luke at the gym!

Thanks for reading and keeping me accountable!

Showing up with Humor!

“Drugs are a waste of time. They destroy your memory and your self-respect and everything that goes along with your self esteem.”

― Kurt Cobain

Feeling happy that this blog is about health and not just weight loss and exercise or I would be in big trouble. Although the scale is going down, I have been remiss in much exercise this week.

On Friday, at the gym, Luke introduced me to a couple new exercises, which was great. Then my daughter picked me up and dropped me off at the Dentist downtown. I had a procedure that has left me loopy for a few days with the Hydrocodone.

I briefly remember being on the phone Saturday evening with HSN. I don’t generally watch HSN and now I am waiting daily to see if Rick, my letter carrier is going to ring the doorbell with a package. Hmm. . . wonder what I might have ordered?

Thankfully I am off the Hydrocodone and I don’t like it at all. I’m treating my pain with Tylenol, but not talking much.

Even with the pain, with the exception of one day, Domingo has walked me daily and most often twice a day. I’m looking forward to feeling better and being back to the gym!

Accountability

“I decided to take an aerobics class. I bent… twisted… gyrated… jumped up and down… and perspired for a half an hour. But by the time I got my tights on…. the class was over!”      – Anonymous

Several years ago I wanted to begin exercising again by riding my recumbent bike for 30 minutes a day. For motivation I called my friend Cheyenne and told her my goal. For every day that week that I didn’t ride my bike, I would pay her $50. She was delighted to help. Did I ride every day that week? Of course!

money  Once I understood how motivated I was by that agreement, I used it with clients.  When they were stuck and not obtaining their goals, I made this offer. They would clearly outline their goals and I would assist them by having them write a $50 check to the charity of their choice. I’d keep the check and if they didn’t reach their goal, I’d put it in the mail to their charity. I’d even provide the stamp.  Just thinking of writing a check (money talks) motivated them to complete the goal. Accountability works.

What motivated me to write this blog, and a case in point, is that I am transcribing this blog on my iPhone while I’m walking Domingo along the Spokane river.  After spending this morning on Skype with Mahfuzul making changes on my website and creating coupon codes to give away a free CD download to my list, I really wanted to stay in my office and get the email out!

Because I have a training session with Luke, my athletic trainer tomorrow morning, I was motivated to “step away from the computer” and take a 45 minute walk in between clients. (Oh, I just found a quarter in the dirt!)

My work is fun and I love it, but I’ll have plenty of time to get back to work later. Right now I’m building my commitment to movement and exercise until my body craves it as much as my mind loves to work.

It helps to be accountable!

Leaky What?

Day Nine (This was Thursday)

Busy day today on Skype with a business associate and then had a session with my creativity coach. I had a breakthrough about blogging during this call. Today I am allowing myself to focus on organizing my office and have a day off from exercise.

I had planned to end with music in the park, but instead when my housekeeper was cleaning she saw that my upstairs toilet tank was leaking. I was doing well until my wrench got stuck on the nut! Thanks to my son-in-law it got fixed.

 t

Okay, housekeeper you say! We all have our splurges. I am not a shopper and believe me, you can spend more money on a purse or shoes than I pay to have Renee come every 2 to 3 weeks to do the cleaning.

My blog is almost caught up to today!! Stay tuned and join the ride!

Iwannabeaskinnybitch!

So it has taken me almost two weeks of blogging in a word document to bring myself to do this, but I am ready to take my journey online! Several months ago I was sitting with one of my clients that I coached and I noticed that week by week she was losing weight and starting to glow. As she left my office I said to her that she was looking great and “I Wanna be a Skinny Bitch!”

And it all began! Over the months my ideas were brewing and of course there is so much more than losing weight. Weight has been an issue for me for most of  my life and now I realize age is compounding the issue. I invite you to join me in this process of losing weight, getting healthy, loving the body you have, being a temple, and all that jazz. I will share my thoughts, struggles, successes and a lot of humor along the way.

With my BFF at Whole Foods in Austin. She has always been my mentor!

Take this journey with me and share your own struggles and successes. I will be adding tools, ideas, valuable gifts and much more.

Next I’ll share how I was motivated to get an athletic trainer. I have 10 days of blogs to post here, so be sure to sign up to receive an email whenever I post. Let’s do this together!

Touch

“I did my best, it wasn’t much, I couldn’t feel, so I tried to touch.”

Leonard Cohen – Hallelujah

After traveling for about 20 hours, we flew into Dubai. I had not been to this airport before and was happy to see it was connected to a hotel and there was a spa where I could get a massage.

After making an appointment at the Spa, I caught up on my blog and chatted with the young man who ran the resource room. He was delighted to hear I was a psychic medium and I gave him my card. He reported he was from the Philippines and enjoyed working in Dubai. I was excited to get into have my massage so quickly, even though I had a six-hour layover.  Unwittingly, I rejected the offer from Emirates Airlines (via email) to upgrade to business class. I thought I would be sleeping most of the time and the $350 seemed an unnecessary splurge. Not a smart move on my part. As it turned out, the seats in the Boeing 777 were close together and there was not much legroom to spread out.

When I approached the Spa counter, I changed my mind to a 90-minute appointment and it was well worth it. I started with a much needed shower to wash the airplane experience from my skin and to start afresh. The essential oils were delightful as the massage therapist began working on the backs of my legs. She took extra time on my lower legs and I thought she was stuck, like a record player, but soon realized after flying, that my legs (other than neck and back) needed the most nurturing!

In the dream state, as I received healing touch, I realized that massage was Universal! Whether I am in India, Ireland, Japan or the US, the process is similar. Depending upon our culture and the nurturing we received from our parents, the need for touch varies, but we all need to be touched.

After the massage I asked if she knew about Reiki and she did not. The next time I am on my way to India, I may stop over in Dubai and teach a Reiki weekend class! Thank goodness for touch! I feel so much better!

(Note: Didn’t have internet until today and I want to share, due to the massage, I have no jet-lag at all!)

Love

“Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.”
― Laozi

When talking about relationships, love is in the forefront. Close your eyes and focus in your heart and feel who it is that fills your heart. Allow memories and images to come up that fill you with love.

This is a practice that can increase your happiness, lighten your mood and shift your attitude. Isn’t it amazing how much we can shift what we are feeling through a simple image of those we love?

Today would be a good day to reach out to a loved one. You can make a call, text or email them, visit them or send them a gift. Our relationships are sacred and creating a memory with them can last forever.

When you cannot be with a loved one for some reason, you can also focus in your heart, bring your consciousness up out of the top of your head, up into the heavens. Imagine the person standing there with you and send love to the person through your heart. This can heal a wounded relationship and bring peace to one who is missing you. You may be surprised when they call you suddenly!

Commitment

“I mean, if the relationship can’t survive the long term, why on earth would it be worth my time and energy for the short term?”
― Nicholas SparksThe Last Song

As stated in the last blog, my word for 2014 is Relationships. This year, my commitment is to bring myself closer into relationship with those I love and care for. It also means becoming aware of the relationships that have been dysfunctional and stressful and if possible to ease out of these relationships, making more time to deepen my relationship with myself and with others.

Truly, I understand with relationships there are so many components. There is setting boundariescompromisecompassionclear communicationperspective and the list is nearly endless. In this 30 day Blog Challenge, I will share with you about my process (probably similar to yours,) in the area of relationships.

Hope you have chosen a word for this year as well. It can be one to focus upon to joyfully bring into your life or to focus upon and create a growth spurt. Music was an expansive word for me in 2013. I welcome Relationships in 2014, to challenge me to grow.
